The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a directive to major telecommunications providers, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and 9mobile, mandating them to promptly inform subscribers about significant network outages. This move aims to enhance transparency and ensure that consumers are adequately informed about service disruptions that may affect their communication needs.

This directive comes in the wake of recent widespread service disruptions. For instance, in February 2024, MTN Nigeria experienced a significant service outage affecting approximately 87 million subscribers. The company attributed the disruption to multiple fibre cuts, which impacted both voice and data services . Similarly, undersea cable damages along the West African coast have previously led to substantial connectivity issues, affecting not only individual users but also businesses and the broader economy .

The NCC's mandate underscores the importance of timely communication between service providers and their customers, especially during unforeseen service interruptions. By ensuring that subscribers are promptly notified, the Commission aims to mitigate the adverse effects of such disruptions on both personal and business activities.

Telecommunication companies are expected to implement this directive immediately, utilizing various communication channels to inform their subscribers about any major network issues. The NCC has emphasized that failure to comply with this directive may result in regulatory actions.
