Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has spoken publicly for the first time since being hospitalised with pneumonia, expressing heartfelt gratitude to fans, the football community, and the NHS for their support during his ongoing recovery.

The 47-year-old was admitted to hospital last week and subsequently missed Newcastle’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday at St. James’ Park.

"A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes," Howe said in a statement released Monday. "They have meant a lot to me and my family."

"I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I'm immensely grateful for the specialist care I'm receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible."

Club Confirms Absence for Upcoming Fixtures

Newcastle confirmed that Howe is expected to remain away from the touchline for the club’s upcoming Premier League fixtures against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. In his absence, assistant coaches Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team.

"Newcastle United can announce that Eddie Howe is recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia," the club said in an official statement. "The club continues to extend its best wishes and support to Eddie and his family as he continues his recovery. Get well soon, gaffer."

Sunday’s match against Manchester United was a poignant moment for Newcastle fans, who unfurled a giant banner in support of their manager. The show of solidarity was deeply moving, with Howe describing the gesture as “very emotional” in a message shared with club staff.

A Resilient Leader on the Sidelines

Howe has been instrumental in Newcastle’s rise in recent seasons, guiding the club to a top-four finish last year and earning widespread praise for his tactical acumen and leadership. His absence comes at a critical point in the Magpies’ season as they push for European qualification.

While the timeline for his return remains uncertain, both the club and its fanbase remain hopeful for a full and swift recovery.
