Qatar earned a historic point at the FIFA World Cup
after a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser secured a 1-1 draw against Switzerland
in their opening group-stage match.
Despite being outplayed for much of the encounter in
the San Francisco Bay Area, Qatar showed resilience and capitalised on
Switzerland’s failure to convert their dominance into goals.
Switzerland took the lead in the first half through a
penalty from Breel Embolo after Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada brought down
Remo Freuler inside the box. Following a lengthy VAR review, Embolo calmly
converted from the spot to put the Europeans ahead.
The Swiss controlled large portions of the game and
created numerous scoring opportunities, finishing with 26 shots. However, their
inability to extend the lead proved costly.
Qatar, appearing in only their second World Cup after
hosting the 2022 tournament, struggled for rhythm early on. The team entered
the competition with limited preparation after two scheduled warm-up matches
were cancelled due to the conflict in the Middle East, making the Switzerland
clash only their third game since December.
The Asian side's best first-half opportunity came
through Edmilson Junior, whose effort was comfortably saved by Swiss goalkeeper
Gregor Kobel after a defensive mistake from Manuel Akanji.
As temperatures soared under the California sun,
clear-cut chances became scarce in the second half. Switzerland came close
through long-range efforts from Granit Xhaka and another attempt by Embolo, but
neither could find the decisive second goal.
Qatar eventually made their opponents pay deep into
stoppage time when veteran defender Boualem Khoukhi rose unmarked at the far
post to head home a dramatic equaliser in the 94th minute, sparking jubilant
celebrations among players and coaching staff.
The match also marked a significant milestone for
Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui, who finally took charge of his first World
Cup game. The Spaniard was famously dismissed by Spain just days before the
2018 World Cup after agreeing to become Real Madrid manager following the
tournament.
For Switzerland, the result will be viewed as a missed
opportunity as they continue their quest to reach the World Cup knockout stages
for a fourth consecutive tournament.
Switzerland will next face Bosnia in Los Angeles,
while Qatar will take on co-hosts Canada in Vancouver as the group stage
continues.
