Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar has been laid to
rest in Katsina State amid renewed calls for decisive action to address the
growing insecurity across northern Nigeria.
The late military officer was buried at the Gidan Dawa
Cemetery in Katsina metropolis after funeral prayers attended by government
officials, security chiefs, senior military officers, traditional leaders,
political associates, family members, and sympathisers.
His death has sparked widespread concern and reignited
debates over the persistent threat posed by banditry and kidnapping in several
parts of the country.
Many mourners described the late general’s death as a
painful reflection of the security challenges confronting ordinary Nigerians,
noting that if a retired senior military officer could fall victim to
kidnappers, the vulnerability of the wider population remains a major concern.
General Abubakar was reportedly abducted alongside his
wife on May 30, 2026, while travelling along the Katsina–Matazu Road on his way
to his hometown.
In a statement, the Katsina State Commissioner for
Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, disclosed that the retired
officer died in captivity due to complications arising from diabetes and
hypertension.
However, the explanation has been challenged by some
stakeholders. The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) argued that regardless of
the immediate medical cause, the circumstances surrounding the retired
general’s death cannot be separated from the insecurity that led to his
abduction.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Jamilu Aliyu
Charanchi maintained that the tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger
measures to combat banditry, kidnapping, and violent crime across the country.
According to him, the death of a retired military
officer while being held by kidnappers raises serious concerns about the safety
and security of citizens and highlights the need for authorities to intensify
efforts to protect lives and property.
Despite the controversy surrounding the circumstances
of his death, tributes continued to pour in for the late officer, with many
remembering his service to the nation and expressing sympathy to his family.
The Coalition of Northern Groups also offered prayers
for the repose of his soul and urged leaders at all levels to confront the
country’s security challenges with greater commitment, sincerity, and urgency.
The death of General Abubakar has further strengthened
calls for comprehensive strategies aimed at restoring peace and preventing
similar tragedies in the future.
