A football match in Ecuador turned tragic after a referee, Javier Ortega, was shot dead in front of spectators during a game.

The 48-year-old official was attacked on Sunday, April 12, in the town of Pasaje, located in the El Oro province. Reports indicate that several unidentified gunmen approached Ortega during the match and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

The shocking incident caused immediate panic, forcing players and fans to run for safety, while the match was abandoned.

Local authorities have since launched an investigation, treating the killing as a targeted attack. Police are currently reviewing mobile phone footage from the scene and questioning witnesses in a bid to identify those responsible.

In response to the tragedy, the organising club has suspended upcoming matches until further notice, as the victim’s family calls for swift justice.

A football official who paid tribute to Ortega described him as a committed professional, condemning the act as senseless violence in a setting meant for sport and community.

The incident has sparked widespread concern, highlighting growing safety issues in public spaces and sporting events in the region.
