The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed that suspected terrorists attacked Iluke Community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area on Wednesday, killing three people, including the Vice Principal of a local school.

According to security authorities, the attackers attempted to carry out a large-scale abduction of students and residents but were repelled by security operatives who engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

Reacting to the incident, the Kogi State Government vowed to ensure that those responsible are tracked down and brought to justice.

In a statement issued in Lokoja, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, expressed sadness over the attack and extended condolences to the families of the victims, the Iluke community, and the entire Bunu District.

Fanwo disclosed that the armed men, reportedly dressed in military uniforms, stormed the community and disrupted an ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to the commissioner, the attackers had already begun forcing students into nearby forests before security personnel intervened and confronted them.

He praised the swift response of military personnel, local vigilantes, hunters, and other security operatives, whose actions prevented what could have become a devastating mass abduction.

“Owing to the superior firepower, professionalism, and courage displayed by security agents, all the students were rescued unharmed and safely returned to their families,” he stated.

During the operation, security forces reportedly neutralised one of the attackers, while several others escaped with gunshot injuries.

The commissioner revealed that security agencies have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are intensifying efforts to apprehend all individuals connected to the attack.

He also commended the sacrifice and bravery of security personnel whose intervention saved lives and prevented further casualties.

Fanwo assured residents that the state government is working closely with security agencies to strengthen security in the affected area and prevent future attacks.

He added that additional security measures would soon be introduced as part of broader efforts to protect lives and property across the state.

The government further urged residents to remain vigilant and support ongoing security operations by providing useful information that could assist in tracking down criminal elements.

“Kogi State will not surrender to terror. Those seeking to disrupt the peace and security of our communities will continue to face a firm, coordinated, and uncompromising response from both the government and security agencies,” Fanwo said.

He also offered condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the peaceful repose of the victims' souls.
