ABC has announced that “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will be
preempted indefinitely, following backlash over the late-night host’s
remarks on the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, a close ally of former President Donald Trump,
was shot dead last week during a speaking event at a Utah university.
Authorities say 22-year-old Tyler Robinson fired a single round from a
rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck. Robinson has since been arrested and
charged with murder.
In his Monday monologue, Kimmel criticized attempts by
Trump supporters to deflect political responsibility for the attack. “We had
some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to
characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of
them and with everything they can to score political points from it,” he said,
referencing Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement.
The remarks sparked controversy as the White House
announced plans to crack down on what it described as a left-wing “domestic
terror movement” in response to the killing. Critics warned the initiative
could be used to stifle political dissent.
ABC did not clarify how long the show will remain off
the air, saying only that the decision was effective immediately.
