Algeria are set to formally lodge a protest with the
Confederation of African Football (CAF) following their quarterfinal defeat to
Nigeria at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Reports indicate that the Algerian Football Federation
(FAF) is dissatisfied with the officiating during the match and has compiled a
list of complaints against Senegalese referee Issa Sy, who handled the
encounter.
According to the FAF, Algeria were wrongly denied a
clear penalty, while several other decisions taken during the game were
questionable and appeared to favour Nigeria. The federation also accused the
referee of displaying bias against the Desert Foxes throughout the contest.
Beyond the in-game decisions, the Algerian FA alleged
that Issa Sy failed to shake hands with Algerian players at full time,
describing the action as unprofessional conduct.
The FAF further claimed that Nigerian players provoked
Algerian officials and players after the final whistle, escalating tensions at
the end of the match.
Algeria also alleged that the controversy spilled off
the pitch, with claims that Algerian journalists and media personnel were
attacked in the tunnel area following the game.
In response to these incidents, Algeria are reportedly
requesting that CAF bans Issa Sy from the remainder of the tournament and
immediately removes him from further officiating duties.
CAF is expected to review the protest, along with all
relevant reports and available evidence, before making a decision on the
matter.
