Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has unveiled his final 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, a selection that has already sparked widespread debate following the omission of several high-profile Super Eagles stars.

According to OwnGoalNigeria, the squad was trimmed down from an initial 54-man provisional list, with Chelle opting for a blend of experience and emerging talent as he prepares Nigeria’s title challenge.

High-Profile Omissions Raise Eyebrows

Among the most notable absentees are Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen), Victor Boniface (Werder Bremen), Tolu Arokodare (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Uche Chrisantus (Crystal Palace), and Kelechi Iheanacho (Celtic).

Their exclusion has surprised many fans and analysts, given their pedigree and recent club performances, and has intensified scrutiny of Chelle’s tactical approach ahead of the tournament.

New Faces Earn AFCON Call-Ups

In what appears to be a deliberate squad refresh, Chelle has handed opportunities to three new players who could make their AFCON debuts in Morocco:

  • Ryan Alebiosu (Blackburn Rovers)
  • Ebenezer Akinsanmiro (Pisa)
  • Rafiu Durosinmi (Viktoria Plzen)

The inclusion of these players signals the coach’s willingness to inject fresh energy and depth into the squad.

Experienced Core Retained

Despite the omissions, the Super Eagles squad still boasts a strong spine of established internationals.
In attack, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Terem Moffi, and Cyriel Dessers are expected to lead Nigeria’s offensive charge.

The midfield is anchored by Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Raphael Onyedika, and Frank Onyeka, providing a balance of creativity, energy, and defensive stability.

Defensively, Chelle has kept faith with regulars such as Calvin Bassey, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Bruno Onyemaechi, Zaidu Sanusi, and Chidozie Awaziem.

Goalkeeping Concerns

There are, however, lingering concerns over the fitness of first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who is recovering from recent ankle and hand injuries. Amas Obasogie and Maduka Okoye have been named as alternatives should Nwabali fail to regain full fitness.

Eyes on Morocco

With the squad now confirmed, competition for starting places is expected to intensify as Nigeria targets a fourth AFCON title in Morocco. All eyes will be on Chelle’s bold selections—and whether his mix of experience and fresh blood can deliver continental success.
