The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will move to
a four-year cycle following the 2027 edition, CAF President Patrice
Motsepe has confirmed, according to BSNSports.com.ng.
Motsepe stated that after the jointly hosted AFCON
2027 in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, the tournament will no longer follow
its traditional two-year cycle, marking a significant change in the
scheduling of Africa’s premier football competition.
The adjustment is aimed at better aligning the
continental championship with the global football calendar, ensuring
player welfare, enhancing competitiveness, and creating room for the newly
introduced African Nations League to grow and provide additional
opportunities for local talent.
This decision ushers in a new era for African
football, with stakeholders anticipating both logistical improvements and a
more structured approach to international competitions on the continent.
