Chuba Akpom, a forward born in England but eligible to
represent Nigeria, has shared his thoughts on why foreign-born players are
opting to switch their international allegiance to Nigeria.
Akpom, who made the switch to Nigeria in 2019, has yet
to receive a call-up to the Super Eagles.
Speaking with Oma Sports, the Ajax Amsterdam striker
explained that many players are making the switch not because they cannot play
for England, but because they never had the chance to represent Nigeria at
youth levels.
“It’s not about players switching because they
can’t play for England, it’s just that they’ve never had the opportunity to
play for Nigeria from a young age,” Akpom said.
“They play in England and represent England at all the
youth levels.”
