Rotimi Amaechi, a presidential aspirant of the African
Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Minister of Transportation, has outrightly
rejected the results of the party's recent presidential primaries, labeling the
outcome as concocted and undemocratic.
Amaechi expressed his dissatisfaction in a statement
shared on his X account on Tuesday, May 26, shortly after the nationwide direct
primaries concluded on Monday, May 25. The internal election, aimed at
selecting the ADC’s flagbearer for the 2027 presidential race, featured top
contenders including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former FSB
International Bank managing director Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, and Amaechi himself.
According to the former Rivers State governor, the
electoral process was heavily compromised by widespread disenfranchisement. He
alleged that nearly 80 percent of registered party members were deliberately
prevented from casting their votes.
"I unequivocally reject the concocted results
being announced," Amaechi declared. He reminded the public and party
leadership of his earlier promise to accept the results only if the primary was
conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, stating that the exercise
completely failed to meet those standards.
"I had initially stated that I will only accept
the outcome of the primaries if the process was free, fair, and transparent,
and I stand by my word. There’s no way that about eighty percent of members of
the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such
results," he added.
Amaechi further criticized the ADC leadership for
hypocrisy, accusing the opposition platform of adopting the exact same
electoral malpractices it frequently condemns in the ruling All Progressives
Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
"A party that criticizes the ruling APC and INEC
for vote buying, rigging and writing of results, cannot be engaged in vote
buying, writing of results, and other electoral malpractices that lead to the
disenfranchisement of voters who are party members," Amaechi concluded.
