Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has said many
Nigerians living in South Africa would rather remain there despite repeated
xenophobic attacks than return to Nigeria because of worsening economic
conditions at home.
Obi made the remarks during a dinner organised for
aspirants of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) in Abuja shortly after
returning from South Africa.
Speaking on Tuesday, the former Labour Party
presidential candidate said efforts had been made to support Nigerians abroad
who wished to return home, including providing facilities to assist their
relocation.
However, Obi revealed that many of the affected
Nigerians rejected the offer, insisting they preferred to remain abroad despite
the challenges they face.
According to him, several Nigerians told him that
economic hardship and living conditions in Nigeria had become more severe than
the difficulties they currently experience in South Africa.
Obi said the conversations reflected the growing
frustration among citizens over the country’s economic situation and the
desperation pushing many Nigerians to seek opportunities outside the country
despite security and social challenges abroad.
