The ongoing 2025 Anambra governorship election has caused significant traffic disruptions in Onitsha, as security officials cordoned off the Niger Bridge to control movement and ensure the safe transportation of election materials and personnel.

A Channels Television correspondent reported that access to the bridge was restricted early Saturday, leaving several trucks and commercial vehicles stranded. The measure, though temporary, created congestion around key entry points into the city.

“Movement across the bridge has been halted to prevent unauthorized transit and safeguard election logistics,” an official at the scene confirmed.

Voting Progresses Peacefully Across the State

Despite the traffic situation, voting was reported to have commenced smoothly in most parts of the state. Officials were deployed to over 5,700 polling units across 21 local government areas, with voting beginning as early as 8:30 a.m. in some locations, including Fegge Community Primary School in Onitsha.

In Nkwo Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government Area, some traders initially opened their shops during voting hours, but market leaders later intervened, ordering all businesses to close in a bid to boost voter participation.

INEC, Police Assure Credible and Safe Poll

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency, urging strict adherence to the electoral process.

“No excuses for failure will be accepted,” he warned, stressing the need for compliance by all stakeholders.

Similarly, Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle assured voters of adequate security, noting that identified threats in high-risk areas had been neutralised.

The election features sixteen candidates vying across three senatorial districts, with a major focus on voter turnout and the functionality of BVAS machines, which are central to accreditation and result transmission.
