The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential
Campaign Council has rejected claims of a plot to eliminate former Vice
President Atiku Abubakar, the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential
candidate for the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on October 20, the council's
spokesman, Dele Alake, responded to an allegation made by Timi Frank, an ADC
member. The council stressed that any credible threat to life deserves serious
attention, regardless of political affiliation, and urged Frank to hand any
evidence he has to law enforcement agencies so a prompt investigation can
begin.
The council firmly denied any involvement by President
Bola Tinubu, the Presidency, or the APC in a plot against Atiku or any other
opposition figure. It also dismissed reports that Atiku's security cover had
been withdrawn, saying he remains under the protection of both the Nigeria
Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Describing the assassination claims as "typical
opposition rabble-rousing," Alake said they were meant to heat up the
political atmosphere and attract international attention through social media.
"Let our political competition be peaceful,
lawful, and focused on the big issues that matter to Nigerians, not character
assassination or wild, baseless allegations," the statement read.
