Arsenal continued their dominant start to the season
with a commanding 4–0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions
League on Tuesday night at the Emirates Stadium.
Goals from Gabriel Magalhães and Gabriel
Martinelli opened the scoring before Viktor Gyokeres finally ended
his nine-game goal drought with a quick-fire double in a 13-minute spell
straddling the hour mark.
The result keeps Mikel Arteta’s men at the top
of their Champions League group — level with Paris Saint-Germain and Inter
Milan — as the only teams to have collected maximum nine points from
their opening three matches.
Gyokeres Finds His Spark
Gyokeres’ early struggles in front of goal had been
one of the few concerns for Arteta in what has otherwise been a near-perfect
campaign. The Swedish striker, brought in from Sporting Lisbon to solve
Arsenal’s long-standing striker issue, had managed just three goals in 11
previous outings — all at home.
But the 26-year-old’s persistence paid off. His first
goal came via a fortunate deflection off David Hancko, leaving Atletico
goalkeeper Jan Oblak stranded. Moments later, he doubled his tally,
reacting quickest to a loose ball after Gabriel won the initial header
from a Declan Rice corner.
Arsenal’s Set-Piece Superiority
As has often been the case this season, Arsenal broke
the deadlock through a set piece. Rice’s curling free-kick found Gabriel, who
rose highest to glance a powerful header into the bottom corner.
Myles Lewis-Skelly,
handed a rare start at left-back in place of Riccardo Calafiori, made
the most of his opportunity by driving forward to assist Martinelli for
Arsenal’s second goal — a sublime curled finish into the far corner.
Atletico’s Struggles Continue
Atletico Madrid offered resistance for much of the
first hour but fell apart once Arsenal took control. The Spanish side remain
winless away from home this season — a worrying sign for Diego Simeone,
whose team looked short of answers after conceding the opener.
Julian Alvarez
came closest for the visitors, missing two big chances — one from a misplaced
clearance by David Raya and another that rattled the crossbar early in
the second half.
Arsenal’s Relentless Form
The victory marked Arsenal’s 12th clean sheet
in as many games this season, with the Gunners conceding just three goals
across all competitions. Arteta was even able to rest key players — Gabriel,
Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, Jurrien Timber, and Martin Zubimendi — late
in the game ahead of their weekend Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
Arsenal, who reached the Champions League semi-finals
last season for the first time since 2009, now look stronger than ever after
another summer of heavy investment. With their sights set on European glory,
the North London side continue to show the depth, discipline, and dominance of
genuine contenders.
Meanwhile, Atletico — who also lost at Anfield earlier
this month — remain stuck on three points from their first three games, leaving
Simeone’s side under growing pressure to turn things around.
