A tragic tanker explosion has claimed multiple lives along the Bida–Agaie road in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday near the Essan and Badeggi communities.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victims were attempting to scoop fuel from a tanker that had earlier crashed when the vehicle suddenly exploded, triggering a massive inferno that consumed several people. Many victims were burnt beyond recognition, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Niger State Tanker Drivers Association and National Ex-Officio of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Comrade Farouk Kawo, described the explosion as “a devastating and completely avoidable tragedy.”

According to Kawo, the tanker was transporting petroleum products from Lagos to northern Nigeria when it lost control and overturned. He lamented that over 30 tanker-related accidents had been recorded along the Bida–Agaie route in October alone, attributing the alarming frequency of such crashes to the terrible condition of the road.

Kawo also condemned the recurring trend of residents rushing to collect fuel from accident sites despite repeated warnings from authorities.

“Just last Sunday, a tanker conveying groundnut oil also crashed in this same area, and people still ran to scoop the product,” he said.

Efforts to reach the Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah, were unsuccessful as calls to his phone went unanswered at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, NUPENG has appealed to Governor Umaru Bago to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Bida–Agaie road to curb further loss of lives and property.

Tanker explosions remain a recurring tragedy across Nigeria. In March, ten people were killed when a tanker caught fire outside Abuja. Similarly, in January, at least 98 people lost their lives in Niger State after a tanker accident led to a deadly rush for spilled fuel. Following that incident, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu launched a nationwide safety awareness campaign to educate the public on the dangers of collecting fuel from accident scenes.
