Arsenal F.C. secured a hard-fought victory over
Mansfield Town F.C. to book their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup
after an entertaining clash at One Call Stadium.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made nine changes to the
side that defeated Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. 1–0 in the Premier League
earlier in the week, a win that moved the Gunners seven points clear at the top
of the table.
Despite the heavy squad rotation, Arsenal took the
lead shortly before half-time through Noni Madueke. The winger found the net
with a curling left-footed effort after his initial attempt had been saved by
Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts.
The hosts responded early in the second half when
substitute Will Evans capitalised on a misplaced pass from young defender Marli
Salmon, calmly beating Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to level the score.
Both teams created several chances as the match opened
up, but Arsenal regained the lead in the 66th minute. Substitute Eberechi Eze
struck a powerful shot from the edge of the box to restore the visitors’
advantage.
The match also saw history made as Max Dowman became
Arsenal’s youngest-ever FA Cup player, starting the match at just 16 years and
66 days old.
Although Mansfield, managed by Nigel Clough, posed a
threat throughout the game, Arsenal held on to secure victory and progress to
the last eight of the competition.
Arteta’s only major trophy with Arsenal remains the FA
Cup he won in 2020 during his first season in charge. However, the club is
currently in strong form and is widely considered a favourite to win the
Premier League for the first time since 2004.
Arsenal also face a busy schedule ahead, including a
UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash against Bayer Leverkusen and a EFL Cup
Final showdown with Manchester City F.C. at Wembley on March 22.
