Arsenal have reached the UEFA Champions League final
for the first time in 20 years after a narrow but decisive 1-0 victory over
Atlético Madrid at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the match late in
the first half, sealing a 2-1 aggregate win after the first-leg draw in Madrid.
The result sends Mikel Arteta’s side into the final, where they will face
either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in Budapest on May 30.
The breakthrough came in the 44th minute following a
sharp attacking move. Viktor Gyökeres’ run unsettled the Atlético defence
before Leandro Trossard forced a save from Jan Oblak, with Saka reacting
quickest to slot home from close range.
The Emirates Stadium erupted in celebration as Arsenal
held firm in the second half to secure their place in the final.
This marks Arsenal’s first appearance in the Champions
League final since 2006, when they lost to Barcelona. It is also their third
major European final, having previously won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994 and
the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1970.
Under manager Mikel Arteta, Arsenal are now chasing an
unprecedented double, with the club also leading the Premier League title race.
The result adds to growing belief that this could be
one of the club’s greatest seasons, with Saka once again emerging as a decisive
figure in Arsenal’s push for silverware.
