Founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, has urged the Federal Government to integrate security training into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme as part of efforts to tackle Nigeria’s growing insecurity.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, the cleric said corps members should be equipped with basic security skills that enable them to identify and respond to threats.

“Our NYSC guys, we should train all of them to the point where they see somebody smoking hemp — not even committing any crime — they swing into action; then security level will increase,” he said.

Calls for Support for President Tinubu’s Security Reforms

Ashimolowo appealed to Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s push for improved policing and military capacity, stressing that national security requires collective effort.

“Let’s stand behind our president now that he has called for more policing. Let’s stand behind our president now that he has called for more soldiers.”

He also noted that Nigeria’s youthful population—estimated at around 60%—should be strategically harnessed for national development and security.

Proposes Israeli-Style Youth Defence Model

The preacher suggested that Nigeria could draw lessons from Israel, where young citizens undergo compulsory military service.

“Every time I go to Israel, I’m amazed Israel’s army are 18-year-olds. You serve in Israel’s army from 18 to 22. All our NYSC guys, we should train all of them,” he said.

According to him, such training would enhance vigilance, readiness, and awareness among young Nigerians, contributing to a strengthened internal security framework.

Cautions Against Misuse of State Police

While commenting on state policing, Ashimolowo warned that the model, though potentially effective, could be abused by political leaders.

“State police may work, but it will end up being the personal army of somebody who will begin to use it at some point to terrorize others,” he cautioned.

‘Let’s Build a Secure and Proud Nation’

Ashimolowo concluded by urging Nigerians to unite in the pursuit of a safer country.

“Let’s raise the security level, let’s make our people proud to be Nigerians… I believe we have leadership that wants to make things work. Let’s support him; let’s be behind him.”

He added that “everyone should go on security maintenance” as part of national responsibility.
