Atletico Madrid secured their first Copa del Rey final
appearance since 2013 after surviving a thrilling second-leg encounter at Camp
Nou, where FC Barcelona almost staged a remarkable comeback.
Barcelona, trailing 4-0 from the first leg in early
February, came out strongly. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal set up Marc Bernal
to score twice, while Raphinha converted a penalty to narrow the aggregate
deficit.
Despite the valiant effort, Andre Lookman and
disciplined defending saw Atletico cling to their advantage. Goalkeeper Juan
Musso was pivotal in the closing stages, denying Barcelona further goals as the
home side pushed relentlessly.
Barcelona’s manager Hansi Flick even sent centre-back Ronald
Araujo forward in the final minutes, desperate for the fourth goal needed to
complete the comeback, but Atletico held firm.
Raphinha acknowledged the disappointment: “We wanted
to be in the final, and I think we deserved it from the game we played, but we
have to respect Atletico… they defended what they had and did well.”
Atletico will now face the winner of Real Sociedad>
and Athletic Bilbao in the final scheduled for April 18 in Seville.
Barcelona showed glimpses of their attacking prowess,
with Ferran Torres, Pedri, and Antoine Griezmann threatening on multiple
occasions. However, injuries — including the early exit of Jules Kounde — and
Atletico’s resolute defense ensured the Rojiblancos held on for a dramatic
victory.
The match highlighted the gap to overcome a first-leg
deficit of 4-0, with Atletico demonstrating tactical discipline and mental
toughness to reach the Copa del Rey final.
