In the ongoing African Women Club Volleyball Championship in
Abuja, Nigeria, two-time champions CFC of Tunisia booked their spot in the
quarterfinals after a commanding 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-20) win over Sococim of
Senegal in their round of sixteen tie.
SOC got off to a shaky start with a number of faults and
trailed 8-1. CFC team raised their game and went on spiking killing spree to
lead 16-8. SOC nailed a spike, however the CFC continued to confidently take
the set 25-11.
It looked like SOC of Senegal had found a refreshed burst of
energy in the second set after going down 25-11 in the 1st set. They hustled
for every ball with some great diving saves to come out 11-11. Unfortunately
the Senegalese team weren’t up to the task of marching this Tunisian outfit,
CFC won the 2nd set 25-17.
Despite CFC leading in the 3 set, SOC responded with a 13-8
led, forcing CFC to call a timeout. SOC closed it with a block and an ace to
the surprised of CFC. CFC eventually
took the final points to win 25-20 and secure their spot in the quarterfinals.
After the game, Journalist Franklyn Imonah caught up with
the assistant captain of CF Carthage of Tunisia Maruwa Bugabi. She was full of
optimism as she spoke.
"We are here to win,nothing less. Every game has its
special taste. We feel great because we
played well and we hope this is the first step to stardom".
She further buttress their chance in the quarter finals.
"We are here to win, we don't have any other choice, we will do our best and fight to the end. We respect our opponent and above all we respect ourselves. Each game for us is like the final, we will pour our hearts into it, Insha Allah, we will win the championship".
CFC will be hoping to dethrone fellow North Africa Zamalek
of Egypt who are the defending champions should they meet anytime soon.
