A prominent presenter on Channels Television, Seun
Okinbaloye, has publicly addressed comments made by the Minister of the Federal
Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, stating that he remains undeterred despite the
controversy.
The situation began after Wike reportedly made a
remark suggesting that he would have reacted violently to the journalist’s
comments during a broadcast discussion on Nigeria’s political landscape. The
statement quickly sparked widespread backlash, with critics expressing concern
over the tone and implications of such rhetoric.
Among those who reacted was Amnesty International,
which condemned the comment as inappropriate and potentially dangerous,
stressing that public officials should avoid language that could be interpreted
as threatening.
In response, Okinbaloye reaffirmed his position on the
issue, emphasizing that open dialogue and differing opinions are essential to a
functioning democracy. He warned that any political system that limits
competition or discourages opposition could undermine democratic principles.
He also disclosed that the minister later contacted
him directly to clarify that his earlier statement was not intended to be taken
literally. While acknowledging the clarification, the journalist maintained
that public discourse must remain respectful and free from any form of
threatening language.
Okinbaloye made it clear that he would not be
intimidated, reiterating his commitment to his profession. He stressed that
journalists have a responsibility to ask critical questions and hold leaders
accountable, regardless of differing viewpoints.
The development has further fueled conversations
around press freedom, responsible political communication, and the importance
of maintaining civility in public discourse within Nigeria’s democratic space.
