Bernardo Silva is set to bring an end to his
successful spell at Manchester City, with the club captain expected to depart
at the conclusion of the current season when his contract expires.
The 31-year-old Portugal international has been a
central figure in City’s dominance over the past decade, helping the team
secure multiple trophies, including six Premier League titles and a UEFA
Champions League crown.
Confirmation of his impending exit came after City’s
emphatic 4–0 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup, where assistant manager Pep
Lijnders addressed the media in place of Pep Guardiola, who was serving a
touchline suspension.
Speaking about Silva’s departure, Lijnders described
the midfielder as irreplaceable, highlighting his unique qualities on the
pitch. He praised Silva’s intelligence, movement, and leadership, noting that
his influence on the team extends beyond just his technical ability.
According to him, replacing a player of Silva’s
calibre is not straightforward, as such individuals bring a distinct style and
understanding of the game that cannot simply be replicated. Instead, he
suggested that the club would focus on evolving the team by integrating new
players and developing young talent from the academy.
Lijnders also emphasized the importance of maintaining
a strong core within the squad, while allowing emerging players to grow into
key roles over time.
Silva joined Manchester City from AS Monaco in 2017
and has since made over 450 appearances for the club, establishing himself as
one of the most consistent and influential midfielders in European football.
As his departure approaches, attention will turn to
how City reshapes its midfield and fills the leadership void left by one of its
most decorated players.
