Bolt Launches Electric Tricycles in Lagos,
Plans to Deploy 1,000 by 2025
Bolt, the ride-hailing company, has introduced an
electric tricycle service in Lagos, marking a major step in its push for
sustainable and inclusive urban transport. The company says this move is aimed
at reducing operational costs for drivers while making vehicle ownership more
accessible.
The new service, launched in collaboration with
electric mobility firm SGX, operates on a lease-to-own model. Drivers
can take home a brand-new electric tricycle after making an initial payment of
?208,000 and consistently repaying small portions from their earnings over a
24-month period. These tricycles are available exclusively through the Bolt
platform and will be managed by SGX fleets.
Bolt’s Regional Director for Africa and International
Markets, Caroline Wanjihia, described the initiative as a way to empower
drivers by lowering their fuel and maintenance expenses while improving their
income potential. “We’re giving drivers the tools to own their vehicles and
reduce day-to-day costs,” she said.
General Manager of Bolt Nigeria, Osi Oguah, emphasized
that the electric tricycles are also designed to serve high-density,
lower-income areas where traditional ride-hailing options are scarce or
unaffordable. “This rollout tackles both driver livelihood and commuter access,
especially in underserved communities,” he noted.
Bolt aims to have 1,000 electric tricycles in
operation across Lagos by the end of 2025. The service is also seen as a
response to the rising cost of fuel and vehicle maintenance, providing a more
stable income model for drivers.
This isn't Bolt's first entry into the tricycle
market. The company launched a similar service in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, back in 2020,
as part of efforts to adapt mobility solutions to local needs.
