Italian football legend Gianluigi Buffon has stepped
down from his position with the Italy national football team following the
team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His decision comes shortly after the resignation of
head coach Gennaro Gattuso, marking a major shake-up in the country’s football
leadership.
Buffon Explains Decision
Buffon said stepping aside was the right move to allow
new leadership to make independent decisions about the future of the team.
He described representing Italy as a lifelong passion
and a great honour, emphasizing the emotional connection he has always had with
the national side.
Historic Low for Italian Football
Italy’s latest setback followed a playoff defeat to
Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team, where they lost on penalties
after a 1-1 draw.
The result means the four-time world champions have
now failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups.
Long Absence from Global Stage
The Azzurri also missed the 2018 and 2022 editions of
the tournament, extending their absence from football’s biggest stage to at
least 16 years.
Major Transition Ahead
Buffon’s departure, alongside Gattuso’s exit, signals
a period of transition for Italian football as the country looks to rebuild and
return to global prominence.
