Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared
to resume competitive football with immediate effect after the Court of
Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld his appeal against a doping
ban.
Mudryk had been provisionally suspended following an
adverse analytical finding for the banned substance meldonium and was
widely reported to have received a four-year ban. The Ukrainian international
has not featured in competitive football since November 2024.
CAS ruled that the 24-year-old could return to action
after he accepted responsibility for breaching anti-doping regulations and
reached an agreement that limited his period of ineligibility to the time he
had already served.
In a statement, the Football Association (FA)
explained that updated scientific testing standards played a significant role
in resolving the case.
According to the FA, changes to the reporting criteria
for meldonium mean that if Mudryk's sample had been collected and analysed
under today's technical standards, it would not have been reported as a
positive result.
The FA said:
"Changes have been made which, while not
retroactive, mean that if Mr Mudryk's sample was collected today, the
concentration of meldonium in the sample would not have been reported and no
anti-doping rule violations would have resulted."
The governing body added that, with the approval of
the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), both parties agreed to resolve the
appeal.
As part of the settlement, Mudryk admitted to the
anti-doping rule violations and accepted a suspension equal to the period he
had already spent sidelined.
"Mr Mudryk is no longer ineligible and may return
to competition with immediate effect," the FA confirmed.
Chelsea welcomed the outcome, saying the revised
scientific reporting standards provided important context to the case.
In a statement, the club said it was pleased that
advances in testing procedures showed Mudryk's sample would not have resulted
in a positive test if it had been analysed under the current standards.
The Blues added that the resolution allows everyone
involved to move forward.
Chelsea signed Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth £88 million, and the winger is now eligible to return to first-team action immediately.
