Chelsea Survive Brighton Thriller as Alonso Maintains Perfect Start

Xabi Alonso continued his impressive start as Chelsea manager as the Blues secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The result marked Alonso’s third consecutive win since taking charge, following Premier League victories over Fulham and Brighton and a League Cup success against Luton.

Chelsea raced into an early lead through Romeo Lavia, who scored his first goal for the club since joining from Southampton in 2023.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 14th minute when Pedro Neto finished smartly after Morgan Rogers created the opening.

Joao Pedro then added a third goal against his former club in the 32nd minute, calmly converting from close range after being picked out by Jorrel Hato.

Brighton responded before half-time when Malick Yalcouye unleashed a powerful volley that flew in off the post, giving the visitors renewed hope.

Chelsea’s defence continued to look vulnerable after the break, and Brighton reduced the deficit further in the 63rd minute.

Pascal Gross’ effort from a tight angle took a major deflection off Joao Pedro and looped over goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who was making his Chelsea debut following his £7.5 million move from Aston Villa.

Cole Palmer restored Chelsea’s two-goal cushion in the 74th minute with a composed finish from the edge of the box.

Gross added another for Brighton deep into stoppage time with a looping header, but Chelsea held on to claim all three points in a frantic seven-goal encounter.

Martinez’s debut was warmly welcomed by Chelsea supporters, particularly after the club’s decision to replace Robert Sanchez following his error-prone performances.

The 33-year-old became Chelsea’s first player aged 30 or above to feature in a league match for the club since 2024.

Arsenal Await Alonso’s First Major Test

Chelsea’s perfect start will face a major examination when Alonso takes his side to face Premier League champions Arsenal on September 6.

The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss has already transformed Chelsea’s attacking fortunes, with the Blues scoring nine goals in their opening three matches.

However, their defensive frailties remain a concern, with four goals conceded during that run.

Alonso could also have to make decisions regarding Enzo Fernandez, who has missed Chelsea’s last two matches amid reports linking the Argentina midfielder with a potential move to Manchester City.

For now, Alonso can celebrate another victory, but the trip to Arsenal is likely to provide a much clearer indication of whether Chelsea can challenge at the top end of the Premier League this season.
