Bruno Fernandes delivered a stunning performance as
Manchester United bounced back from their disappointing opening-day defeat with
a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday.
United manager Michael Carrick appeared set for
another frustrating afternoon against a newly promoted side after Leif Davis
gave Ipswich the lead in the 29th minute, with his effort crashing in off the
crossbar.
However, Fernandes sparked United’s comeback just
before half-time.
Marcelino Nunez’s mistake allowed Matheus Cunha to
find the United captain, who produced a superb finish in the 40th minute to
level the scores.
United completed the turnaround 11 minutes into the
second half when Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves turned Harry Maguire’s effort
into his own net under pressure.
Ipswich appealed for handball against Maguire, but VAR
dismissed the claims and the goal stood.
Greaves endured an unfortunate spell moments later
when he brought down Cunha inside the box, giving United a penalty. Fernandes
made no mistake from the spot to put the hosts 3-1 ahead.
The Portuguese midfielder completed his hat-trick in
the 68th minute, finishing from close range after efforts from Kobbie Mainoo
and Bryan Mbeumo were blocked.
It was Fernandes’ second Premier League hat-trick for
Manchester United, five years after his treble against Leeds United.
United continued to dominate, with Fernandes turning
provider in the 82nd minute. His pass released Mbeumo, who produced a clever
lob that clipped the crossbar before crossing the line to make it 5-1.
Chuba Akpom scored a late consolation for Ipswich in
stoppage time, but United comfortably secured their first league victory of the
campaign.
The result marked a strong response from United after
their 2-0 defeat to Hull City on the opening weekend.
“It was a massive result for us. We lost three points
last week. First game at home, the fans have been waiting for this,” Fernandes
said after the match.
“Scoring goals is the best feeling in football. Doing
a hat-trick at home with our fans is something I’m proud of. I hope I can do
much more and help my teammates score too.”
Leeds Hold Brentford
Brentford were denied a perfect start after being held
to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United.
Kevin Schade put Brentford ahead with an audacious
flick, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised by turning home Lukas Nmecha’s
driven cross.
The result preserved Leeds’ unbeaten start to the new
Premier League campaign.
Sunderland Claim First Win
Sunderland also picked up their first victory of the
season with a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham.
Wilson Isidor scored the decisive goal 15 minutes from
full-time to give Sunderland all three points.
