A coalition of friends, family, and associates of late human rights icon, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), has demanded the immediate demolition of a controversial building constructed dangerously close to his family residence in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

Speaking during a press conference on Friday, which coincided with Fawehinmi’s posthumous birthday, the group expressed deep concern over the safety risks posed by the four-storey structure. They said the construction violates Lagos State urban development laws and endangers the Fawehinmi family's lives and property.

In a joint statement signed by prominent figures like Femi Falana (SAN), Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), Richard Akinnola, and others, the coalition revealed multiple incidents, including the collapse of a 1000-litre water tank into the Fawehinmi compound on three separate occasions.

“The safety of the Fawehinmi family is at stake. We must not wait for a tragedy before action is taken,” said Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director of the International Press Centre (IPC).

The group further cited the building’s violation of the required three-meter setback law, its commercial nature that could attract criminal activities, and the continued risks to nearby residents. They also called for a full investigation into how approvals were granted for such construction despite earlier orders to halt it, notably from former Lagos Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Muiz Banire.

Femi Falana urged the Lagos State Government to swiftly demolish the illegal building and prosecute those responsible for the regulatory breaches.

The coalition vowed to sustain public pressure until justice is served, protecting both the Fawehinmi family's safety and the late activist’s enduring legacy.

Public support for their demand continues to grow as many Nigerians rally behind the call for urgent government action.
