Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has sparked debate
after calling for Western nations to halt immigration from developing countries
in the wake of violent unrest in Northern Ireland.
McGregor made the comments on X after a night of
disturbances in Belfast that followed an alleged attack involving a 30-year-old
Sudanese man, identified as Hadi Alodid. Reports indicate that the incident
triggered widespread public anger and led to anti-immigration demonstrations
across parts of the city.
The protests escalated into disorder, with several
vehicles, homes, and a bus reportedly set ablaze as some demonstrators demanded
stricter immigration policies and the removal of migrants from the country.
Responding to the events, McGregor argued that Western
nations should focus on assisting people in their home countries rather than
accepting more migrants.
In a post on X, the mixed martial arts star wrote:
“Ban immigration from the Third World now. Help them from where they are. As we
have done over the years so many times beautifully and nobly. They cannot come
here any longer.”
The remarks have generated significant discussion
online, with supporters arguing for stronger border controls while critics have
accused McGregor of making broad generalizations about immigrants based on the
actions of an individual.
The incident and the reaction it provoked have once
again brought immigration policy and public safety concerns to the forefront of
political debate in parts of the United Kingdom and across Europe.
