A Federal High Court has declined to grant an interim
request seeking to bar Ireti Kingibe from participating in the affairs of the
African Democratic Congress (ADC), instead directing that she be formally
notified of the case.
Judge Insists on Fair Hearing
In his ruling, Justice Lifu held that decisions
involving political participation must be handled with caution and fairness,
stressing that both parties must be heard before any determination is made.
He stated that justice can only be achieved when the
defendant is given the opportunity to respond to the allegations brought
against her.
Court Orders Service of Processes
The court directed the plaintiffs to serve all
relevant legal documents on the senator to ensure she is properly informed and
able to prepare her defence.
The matter has been adjourned to April 20, 2026, when
both parties are expected to appear for the hearing of all pending
applications.
Background of the Dispute
The case was filed by ward members, including Okezuo
Godfrey Anayo and Isaiah Ojonugwa Samuel, who claimed to be acting on behalf of
others within the Wuse Ward.
They alleged that Kingibe was suspended on March 10,
2026, over accusations of anti-party activities, misconduct, and interference
with party records.
The plaintiffs sought an interim injunction to stop
her from identifying as a member of the ADC or carrying out any party-related
activities pending the outcome of the case.
Allegations Against the Senator
According to the plaintiffs, the suspension followed
due process under the party’s constitution and was supported by a two-thirds
majority of ward executives.
They further accused the senator of ignoring the
suspension, continuing to organise parallel meetings, and issuing statements as
a party member.
They also alleged intimidation of ward officials using
security personnel.
Defence Challenges Suit
A lawyer representing the senator, Abubakar Marshall,
indicated that a preliminary objection has been filed challenging the suit.
He confirmed that the objection has been served on the
plaintiffs’ legal representatives.
Political Undertones
The dispute is believed to be linked to internal party
tensions, with some ward leaders reportedly aligned with Nyesom Wike.
