Students of University of Jos have begun leaving their
hostels in large numbers following escalating security concerns in parts of
Jos.
Many were seen carrying their belongings and moving in
groups toward safer locations, with some gathering at the Old Airport
Roundabout as they prepared to leave the area.
Government Supports Evacuation Effort
The evacuation was supported by the Plateau State
Government, which provided transportation to move students from the campus to
designated safe points.
Authorities reportedly allowed the vehicles to operate
despite curfew restrictions to ensure the safe relocation of students.
University Orders Immediate Exit
The directive for students to vacate the hostels was
issued by the Vice-Chancellor, Tanko Ishaya, as a precautionary measure.
In a statement released by the Deputy Registrar for
Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, the university cited growing
instability and disturbances in nearby areas as the reason for the decision.
Management emphasized that the safety of students
remains the top priority.
Security Measures on Campus
The institution confirmed that security personnel have
been deployed across the campus to protect facilities and maintain order.
Officials also assured that efforts are ongoing to
stabilise the situation and resume normal academic activities once conditions
improve.
Unrest Linked to Recent Attack
The evacuation follows renewed unrest in Jos after the
partial lifting of a curfew imposed in response to a deadly attack in Angwan
Rukuba.
Gunmen reportedly carried out the attack on March 29,
leaving at least 28 people dead, including members of the university community.
Subsequent reports indicated sporadic violence in
parts of the city, raising fears of further escalation despite increased
security presence.
Calls for Calm Amid Uncertainty
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as
security agencies continue operations to restore peace across the state.
However, concerns persist over the fragile security
situation, with many calling for sustained intervention to prevent further
violence.
