Several people are feared dead following an attack by
suspected terrorists on Anguwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government
Area of Plateau State on Sunday, March 29.
Residents reported that the attackers, who arrived on
motorcycles, opened fire on youths in the area, killing an unspecified number
before fleeing the scene.
In response to the incident, aggrieved youths
reportedly blocked major roads within the community, heightening tensions and
raising concerns about possible unrest.
The state government has since imposed a 48-hour
curfew across Jos North Local Government Area to restore calm. The directive
was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and
Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, who condemned the attack as senseless and
unprovoked.
The curfew, which took effect from midnight on Sunday,
will remain in place until April 1, 2026. Authorities say the measure is aimed
at preventing further breakdown of law and order while security agencies pursue
those responsible.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang assured residents
that security personnel have been deployed to stabilise the situation and
safeguard lives and property. He also urged the public to remain vigilant and
cooperate with security agencies by sharing useful information.
The incident has also affected academic activities at
the University of Jos, which announced the postponement of examinations
scheduled for March 30 and 31 due to safety concerns.
The attack comes just weeks after a separate incident
in the state, where over 20 security personnel and vigilantes were reportedly
killed in an ambush in Kanam Local Government Area, underscoring ongoing
security challenges in the region.
