The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a cyclist following a fatal road accident in Ikeja.

In a statement released on Monday by LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department and signed by Adebayo Taofiq, the agency said the incident occurred along the traffic signal corridor inward Airport Road.

According to the statement, the crash involved a DAF articulated truck and a cyclist. Preliminary investigations revealed that both road users attempted to manoeuvre the roundabout beneath the bridge simultaneously. The truck was reportedly approaching from the Maryland axis at the time.

LASTMA explained that the cyclist failed to keep a safe distance from the articulated truck, leading to a collision that proved fatal.

“The unfortunate incident resulted in the cyclist being crushed by the truck and losing his life instantly,” the agency stated.

Officials of LASTMA who were on traffic duty at the scene were said to have acted swiftly by stopping the truck driver, who allegedly tried to escape after the accident.

“The driver was immediately apprehended while attempting to flee the scene to avoid responsibility and was subsequently handed over to officers of the Ikeja Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution,” the statement added.

To restore traffic flow and ensure safety at the location, officers of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) were invited to remove the deceased’s remains from the road.

Reacting to the tragic incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed deep sympathy to the family of the deceased.

He offered prayers for strength and comfort for the bereaved family, describing the incident as a painful and avoidable loss.

Giwa also warned cyclists and commercial motorcyclists to exercise greater caution on Lagos roads, stressing that expressways and major highways are not designated for such users.

According to him, the state government has consistently carried out public sensitisation campaigns—through jingles and documentary outreach—to educate cyclists and other vulnerable road users on the importance of restricting their movement to inner roads and staying away from high-risk corridors. He noted that the advisory equally applies to skateboarders and users of other non-motorised transport.

LASTMA reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strict traffic enforcement, continuous public awareness, and the protection of all road users, urging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to obey traffic regulations to prevent needless loss of life.
