Ousmane Dembele delivered a standout performance with
two goals as Paris Saint-Germain secured a 2-0 second-leg victory over
Liverpool FC, sealing their place in the semi-finals.
Despite showing improvement from the first leg,
Liverpool were unable to overturn the deficit, having already suffered a 2-0
loss in Paris. Manager Arne Slot had earlier described his side’s first-leg
display as “survival mode,” highlighting how fortunate they were to remain
competitive in the tie.
After the match, captain Virgil van Dijk admitted the
result was disappointing but acknowledged PSG’s superiority over the two legs,
stating that effort alone was not enough at that level.
The defeat effectively ends Liverpool’s hopes of
winning silverware this season and was compounded by a serious injury concern
involving Hugo Ekitike. The striker was stretchered off in the first half after
an awkward fall, with initial assessments suggesting a potentially severe
Achilles injury that could sideline him for months.
Ekitike, who joined from Eintracht Frankfurt, has
scored 17 goals in 45 appearances this season and was expected to be part of
France’s World Cup plans.
With Ekitike likely unavailable, attention now turns
to Alexander Isak, who is set to lead the attack in Liverpool’s upcoming
Merseyside derby against Everton FC at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Van Dijk emphasized the need for the team to quickly
refocus, noting the importance of the derby clash, even as the disappointment
of their European exit lingers.
