Real Madrid has paid tribute to one of its most iconic
figures, describing José Emilio Santamaria as “one of the greatest legends” in
the club’s history and world football.
Santamaria, a commanding centre-back, joined Madrid in
1957 from Uruguayan club Club Nacional and became a key part of one of the most
successful eras in the club’s history.
Speaking on his legacy, club president Florentino
Perez highlighted that Santamaria was part of the legendary team alongside
Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, Francisco Gento, and Raymond Kopa—a
generation that helped establish Real Madrid’s global dominance.
During his time at the club, Santamaria won four
European Cups (1958, 1959, 1960, and 1966) and six La Liga titles, cementing
his place among the club’s all-time greats.
Internationally, he represented Uruguay 25 times
before later becoming a naturalised Spanish citizen. He went on to play for
Spain at the 1962 FIFA World Cup and later served as a coach.
Real Madrid’s tribute reflects the lasting impact
Santamaria had both at club level and on the global football stage, as fans and
the football community remember his contributions to the sport.
