The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has concluded a three-day
high-level media assessment tour of the North East theatre of operations to
evaluate the sustainability of peace, security, and post-conflict recovery in
areas reclaimed from insurgents.
The tour, coordinated by the Directorate of Defence
Media Operations (DDMO), provided senior defence correspondents and media
professionals with independent access to the Joint Task Force (North East),
Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK). The initiative aimed to offer firsthand insight
into ongoing military operations, civil-military cooperation, and stabilisation
efforts across the region.
Receiving the delegation at the Theatre Headquarters
in Maiduguri, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam
Abubakar, said the Armed Forces are increasingly adopting a holistic
security strategy that blends sustained kinetic operations with robust
non-kinetic interventions.
He noted that while military pressure on terrorist
groups remains relentless, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi
Oluyede, has placed strong emphasis on people-centred approaches designed
to win the trust and confidence of conflict-affected communities.
“The CDS and the Service Chiefs remain committed to
people-focused operations,” the Theatre Commander said. “Information is a
critical tool in asymmetric warfare, and we urge the media to maintain credible
and balanced reporting that strengthens public trust and national confidence.”
During an extensive operational briefing, Major
General Abubakar highlighted progress recorded in several recovered
communities, pointing to a gradual restoration of socio-economic activities. He
cited the resumption of farming and local commerce, enhanced security for
vulnerable populations, and improved operating conditions for humanitarian
agencies and international non-governmental organisations.
According to him, these gains underscore the Armed
Forces’ broader objective of ensuring that military successes translate into
lasting peace and improved living standards for civilians.
Speaking on behalf of the media delegation, Ibrahim
Bukar commended the Defence Headquarters for promoting transparency and
constructive engagement with the media, describing strategic communication as a
“force multiplier” in contemporary conflict management.
“National security is a collective responsibility,” he
said. “The resilience and sacrifices of troops under Operation HADIN KAI are
evident, and responsible media engagement is vital in helping the public
understand the scale and impact of these efforts.”
As part of the tour, the delegation visited the Joint
Investigation Centre, where they observed procedures for the processing and
rehabilitation of de-radicalised individuals. They also assessed operational
readiness and troop welfare at Forward Operating Bases in Tunkushe and Molai,
where frontline personnel are deployed.
The tour concluded with the presentation of souvenirs
and a group photograph, symbolising strengthened cooperation, transparency, and
accountability between the Nigerian Armed Forces and the media as both
institutions continue to play complementary roles in advancing lasting peace
and stability in the North East.
