Luis Díaz delivered a late heroics masterclass as
Bayern Munich overturned an early deficit to seal a 3–1 comeback victory over
St Pauli at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, bouncing back from their midweek
Champions League defeat to Arsenal.
Suspended for Wednesday’s clash in London — Bayern’s
first loss of the season — Díaz proved decisive on his Bundesliga return. The
Colombian winger headed in a Harry Kane cross in the 93rd minute to give
Bayern the lead before Nicolas Jackson struck again four minutes later
to seal the win.
The victory ensured Bayern avoided dropping points for
just the second time this Bundesliga season.
Shock Start for St Pauli
Struggling St Pauli, who arrived in Munich on the back
of eight straight league defeats, stunned the champions early. Bayern’s
Joshua Kimmich was dispossessed in midfield, allowing Andreas Hountondji
to outmuscle Kim Min-jae and fire past Manuel Neuer at the near post in the 6th
minute.
Bayern responded aggressively, hitting the post three
times through youngsters Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof, but St Pauli held firm
for much of the first half.
Diaz Inspires the Turnaround
Díaz, heavily involved throughout, created Bayern’s
equaliser just before halftime. Redeeming Kim Min-jae’s earlier error, the
Korean defender floated a long ball into the box. Díaz lost his footing but
still managed to flick the ball into the path of Raphael Guerreiro, who
smashed home from close range to make it 1–1.
In the second half, Harry Kane continued to threaten
and struck the woodwork with 10 minutes left, but the England captain would
become the provider in added time. His lofted cross found Díaz, who powered in
a header to complete the comeback.
Chelsea loanee Nicolas Jackson then added a
third with the final kick of the match to seal the 3–1 win.
‘Belief Carried Us Through’ — Neuer
Manuel Neuer praised the team’s resilience after
falling behind.
“We kept going after we went behind and were unlucky
to hit the post three times. The late goals were a relief,” the Bayern captain
said.
RB Leipzig’s Friday draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach
means Bayern finish the weekend eight points clear at the top of the
Bundesliga table.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga
Later on Saturday, Bayer Leverkusen host Borussia
Dortmund and could move level on points with second-placed RB Leipzig with
a victory.
