The Economic Community of West African States
(ECOWAS) Mediation and Security Council (MSC) has suspended
Guinea-Bissau from all its decision-making bodies following the recent
military takeover. The decision came after an emergency meeting chaired by
Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio.
Military officers seized power on Wednesday,
November 26, 2025, three days after disputed presidential and legislative
elections, suspending the electoral process, closing borders, and detaining
key officials, including President Umaro Sissoco Embalo.
The MSC strongly condemned the coup, demanding
the unconditional release of all detained officials, and urged
respect for the will of the people by allowing the electoral body to
announce results without interference.
Meanwhile, the coup leaders have appointed General
Horta N’Tam, the army chief of staff, as the country’s transitional leader for
one year.
