Belem, Brazil —
At the ongoing COP30 climate conference, participating countries agreed
on Monday that Addis Ababa, Ethiopia will host the COP32 summit in
2027, edging out Nigeria in the bid.
The announcement was confirmed by André Corrêa do
Lago, President of this year’s COP30, with formal adoption expected on
Tuesday.
Ethiopia launched its bid in September and competed
directly with Nigeria. According to Reuters, the Bureau of African Countries
unanimously supported Ethiopia as the host candidate.
Meanwhile, the host for next year’s COP31 (2026)
remains undecided, with Australia (in partnership with the Pacific
Islands) and Turkey both vying for the slot. Corrêa do Lago urged
countries in the Western European and Others Group to resolve the impasse
promptly. If no agreement is reached, the conference could default to Bonn,
Germany, home to the U.N. climate agency.
COP30 itself is being held this year in Belem,
Brazil, in the Amazon region, continuing global discussions on climate
action and international cooperation.
