The Federal Government’s committee on the rehabilitation of police training institutions has pledged to ensure the full restoration of the Nigeria Police Training School, Nonwa-Tai, in Rivers State, and similar facilities across the country.

Chairman of the committee and Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, gave the assurance on Thursday during an inspection visit to the abandoned Nonwa-Tai training school.

The team, which includes Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba (rtd), and Assistant Inspector General Olatunji Disu, was accompanied by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The visit forms part of a nationwide assessment ordered by President Bola Tinubu to evaluate and restore the state of police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) training institutions.

Upon arrival, the committee members were met with a disheartening sight — vandalised structures, dilapidated classrooms and offices, and overgrown parade grounds.

Governor Mbah said the committee is collaborating with consultants to prepare a detailed bill of quantities to guide the renovation of police training facilities nationwide.

“The president personally inaugurated this committee because he recognises that we are at a security crossroad. Nothing short of a total overhaul is required,” Mbah said.
“You cannot train 30,000 new police personnel in such deplorable conditions.”

Governor Fubara described the visit as a major step toward restoring professionalism and morale within the police force, commending President Tinubu’s “genuine commitment to improving national security.”

Governor Abiodun disclosed that the committee has just one month to submit its report and has divided into two teams to cover both northern and southern training centres.

“What we have seen here in Nonwa-Tai is not different from Lagos, Jos, or Maiduguri. The president wants results — and fast,” Abiodun said. “This is clear evidence of political will.”

Established in the 1970s, the Nonwa-Tai Police Training School last trained recruits in 2022.
