South Africa’s 2-0 victory over Lesotho on March 21
in Polokwane has been overturned and replaced with a 3-0 defeat,
following a ruling by FIFA’s disciplinary committee.
The decision sees Bafana Bafana drop to second
place in Group C of the African Zone World Cup qualifiers, sitting behind Benin
on goal difference, while Lesotho remain fifth.
FIFA ruled that South Africa violated Article 19 of
the Disciplinary Code by fielding Teboho Mokoena, who was ineligible
after accumulating two yellow cards in earlier matches against Benin and
Zimbabwe.
As part of the sanctions, the South African
Football Association (SAFA) has been fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($12,536).
However, SAFA retains the right to appeal to the FIFA Appeals Committee.
