Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has been charged alongside X (formerly Twitter) Incorporated and Meta Platforms (Facebook) in a case filed before the Federal High Court.

According to court filings, Sowore allegedly used his official X handle on August 25, 2025, to publish a post deemed offensive against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The post read:

“This criminal @officialPBAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The prosecution claims the comment violates Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024, which criminalises certain online communications.

The charges also list X Incorporated and Meta (Facebook) as co-defendants, suggesting that the platforms provided the medium through which the alleged offence was committed.

The case falls within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, and proceedings are expected to test the boundaries of Nigeria’s updated cybercrime law against free expression on social media.
