France has pledged to deepen its security cooperation
with Nigeria, with President Emmanuel Macron declaring firm support for
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in tackling the country’s escalating
security challenges.
In a message posted on his X handle, Macron
disclosed that he held a direct conversation with President Tinubu, during
which he reaffirmed France’s commitment to assisting Nigeria as it battles
terrorism and violent extremism, especially across the northern region.
“I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria,
@officialABAT,” Macron wrote.
“I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges,
particularly the terrorist threat in the North.”
France to Expand Cooperation at Tinubu’s
Request
Macron noted that France will intensify collaboration
with Nigerian authorities, adding that the move follows a specific request from
President Tinubu for enhanced international partnership and increased support
for communities affected by insecurity.
“At his request, we will strengthen our partnership
with the authorities and our support for the affected populations,” he stated.
Macron Urges Global Partners to Act
The French leader also issued a strong appeal to the
international community, stressing that global actors must not leave Nigeria to
confront its security crisis alone.
“We call on all our partners to step up their
engagement.
No one can remain a spectator,” Macron added.
Context
Macron’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria is
seeking stronger international alliances to stem rising threats from
insurgency, banditry, and violent extremism. France’s renewed commitment
signals a potential expansion of strategic security cooperation,
intelligence-sharing, and community support efforts as Nigeria ramps up its
stabilization initiatives.
