Turkish champions
Galatasaray are preparing to hand Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen the club’s
iconic No. 9 jersey as part of an ambitious effort to convince him to remain in
Istanbul amid growing interest from several top European clubs.
Osimhen has worn the No. 45
shirt since joining Galatasaray from Napoli, as the No. 9 jersey has been
occupied by Argentine forward Mauro Icardi throughout their time together at
the club.
However, with Icardi
expected to leave at the end of his contract this summer, Galatasaray are
reportedly ready to offer the prestigious shirt number to Osimhen as a symbol
of his importance to the club and its future ambitions.
The move forms part of a
broader strategy designed to keep the Super Eagles star despite strong transfer
interest from some of Europe’s elite clubs. Reports have linked Osimhen with
potential moves to Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona,
and Atletico Madrid.
Manchester United are said
to be particularly keen on securing the services of the 27-year-old striker as
they seek a prolific goalscorer capable of leading their attack in the UEFA
Champions League next season.
Galatasaray, who reportedly
signed Osimhen permanently from Napoli in a Turkish transfer-record deal worth
€75 million, are understood to value the striker between €130 million and €150
million and have so far resisted approaches from interested clubs.
Beyond the No. 9 jersey, the
club is also considering handing Osimhen the captain’s armband following
Icardi’s expected departure. Club officials reportedly view the Nigerian
international as one of the most influential figures in the dressing room and believe
a leadership role could further strengthen his connection to the club.
Turkish football analyst Ali
Naci Kucuk recently revealed that Galatasaray see the captaincy as an
attractive proposition, particularly because such a position may not be
immediately available to Osimhen at clubs with established leadership
structures.
Together, the captaincy and
the iconic No. 9 shirt represent Galatasaray’s strongest effort yet to persuade
Osimhen to commit his long-term future to the club.
On the pitch, the striker
has continued to justify his status as one of Europe’s most sought-after
forwards. This season, he registered 15 league goals and five assists in 22
appearances, while also contributing seven goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions
League matches before Galatasaray’s elimination at the hands of Liverpool in
the Round of 16.
His performances have played
a pivotal role in helping Galatasaray secure consecutive Turkish Süper Lig
titles, further cementing his reputation as one of the most influential African
footballers in Europe.
