Germany and the Netherlands ended their European World
Cup qualifying campaigns in style on Monday, recording dominant victories to
secure their places at the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada, and
Mexico.
In Leipzig, Germany overpowered Slovakia 6-0. The
hosts took control early, with Nick Woltemade opening the scoring in the 18th
minute, followed by Serge Gnabry’s strike 11 minutes later. Leroy Sané netted
twice before halftime, and substitutes Ridle Baku and Assan Ouedraogo added
goals in the second half.
“We showed incredible team spirit and pushed ourselves
on the pitch from the very beginning,” Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann told
ZDF.
Woltemade added: “I’m playing, I’m scoring goals, and
I’m hopefully playing at the World Cup. Tonight, we showed the quality we have
in this team.”
Meanwhile, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands overcame
Lithuania 4-0 in front of 50,000 spectators. Tijani Reijnders opened the
scoring in the 15th minute with an assist from Frenkie de Jong. Cody Gakpo
converted a penalty in the 58th minute, followed by quick strikes from Xavi
Simons and Donyell Malen.
“I watched the last World Cup at home,” Reijnders
said. “This time, it’s very different for me, and I’m really looking forward to
taking part for the first time.”
Other key results saw Slovakia finish second in Group
A, while Poland claimed second place in Group G after a 3-2 victory over Malta.
In Group L, Croatia came from behind to defeat Montenegro 3-2, and the Czech
Republic thrashed Gibraltar 6-0. Northern Ireland, despite beating Luxembourg
1-0, will enter the European play-offs thanks to their Nations League
performance.
Germany and the Netherlands now join the list of
European teams confirmed for the 2026 World Cup, while the play-offs in March
will decide the remaining spots.
