Portuguese footballer Quevin Castro has died at the age of 25 after collapsing during a pre-season friendly match in Lisbon.

Castro, who previously played for English club West Bromwich Albion, reportedly collapsed during the first half of Real Sport Clube’s friendly against top-flight side Estrela de Amadora at the Estadio das Seixas on Saturday.

The Lisbon Football Association (AFL) confirmed that the midfielder died during the pre-season fixture, expressing condolences to his family, teammates and the wider football community.

Real Sport Clube described Castro as a beloved member of the club’s sporting family, saying his impact extended beyond his performances on the pitch.

The midfielder grew up in Thetford, Norfolk, and joined West Brom in 2021. He made his debut for the club in a Carabao Cup match against Arsenal before making another appearance against Swansea later that season.

Castro subsequently joined Burton Albion on loan and went on to represent several clubs in England, including Cambridge City, York City and Notts County.

He began his development at Sporting Clube’s academy before returning to Portugal last summer to continue his career.

West Bromwich Albion expressed shock and sadness over the news, describing themselves as “devastated” by Castro’s death.

The Championship club said its players would wear black armbands and observe a period of applause in the 25th minute of their match against Burnley on Sunday as a tribute to the midfielder.

Castro’s death has sent shockwaves through the football community, with tributes expected from former teammates, clubs and supporters in Portugal and England.

At just 25, his sudden passing has brought renewed sadness to the football world and left family, friends and colleagues mourning the loss of a young player whose career was still unfolding.
