Nigeria’s women’s beach volleyball team has secured a
historic qualification for the Olympic Games for the first time after defeating
Morocco 2-0 in the final of the 2026 CAVB Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship
in Alexandria, Egypt.
The victory on Saturday, August 22, 2026, earned
Nigeria the continental ticket to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United
States, where the team will compete in the women’s beach volleyball event.
Nigeria produced a dominant performance in the final,
winning the two sets 21-17 and 21-10 to claim the gold medal and secure its
place in Olympic history.
The team had earlier booked its place in the final
with a convincing 2-0 victory over Mozambique in the semi-final. Nigeria won
both sets 21-17.
The historic achievement marks a major breakthrough
for Nigerian beach volleyball, with the country finally securing an Olympic
appearance after several previous attempts.
President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF),
Musa Nimrod, congratulated the players and described the qualification as a
landmark achievement for the country.
Nimrod noted that Nigeria had reached the championship
final on three previous occasions but finished as runners-up each time.
He expressed gratitude for finally achieving victory
on the team’s fourth appearance in the final, stressing that the qualification
was not only a success for the Nigeria Volleyball Federation but for the entire
country.
The historic result gives Nigeria a chance to compete
on the biggest stage in international sport when the 2028 Olympic Games take
place in Los Angeles.
