Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has played down
speculation that he is set to leave the club at the end of the season.
On Tuesday, May 18, reports suggested City were making
internal plans for Guardiola’s departure after Sunday’s Premier League match
against Aston Villa. The reports also claimed Guardiola’s former assistant,
Enzo Maresca, had emerged as a leading candidate to replace him.
However, Guardiola rejected the rumours during a press
conference ahead of City’s trip to Bournemouth. When asked about his future, he
said, “So many times, I have one more year,” adding that he remains committed
to Manchester City despite the reports.
Guardiola, who still has a year left on his contract
at the Etihad Stadium, also dismissed suggestions that Tuesday’s match could be
part of a farewell tour. He responded simply that he is under contract.
He was further questioned about claims that the club
might honour him by naming the newly expanded North Stand after him if he exits
this summer. Guardiola said he had “no idea” about such an idea, adding that it
would not be necessary.
Since joining City in 2016, Guardiola has turned the
club into one of the most dominant teams in world football, winning six Premier
League titles, the Champions League, three FA Cups, and five League Cups.
Despite ongoing uncertainty, Guardiola’s team is still
in a strong position to finish the season with another league title, having
already secured FA Cup and Carabao Cup success this campaign.
